Porcellio laevis - Tropical Orange x 12
Captive bred - In-house
Porcellio laevis were first recorded in Britain as far back as the 13th century but the scientific community have an on-going arguement that they originated in North Africa and possibly accidentally distributed throughout Europe by the Roman Empire as stowaways on ships. The Tropical Orange is a colour morph of the wild grey type found in Spain from selective breeding.
This very low priced, prolific isopod is large and has a striking orange colouration which makes it very attractive in bio-active builds.
It can handle a vast range of temperatures as low as 5C to 30C+ providing the humidity doesn't dip below 50%. 23-26C, 70% humidity appears to be the optimum conditions for health and reproduction.
This species will eat almost anything and does much better if provided with a source of protein from time to time. This can be dead arthropods, dried fish etc which it will consume with glee.
