Cristarmadillidium muricatum - European Spikey Isopod
Captive bred - In-house
The European spikey isopod can be found in South-Eastern Spain along the coast from Alicante to Valencia and the Balearic islands where the temperature reaches sub-tropical levels.
Typical climate ranges from 17C in the winter months (Nov - March) to the low 30s in mid-summer. This gives this little isopod a vast range of temperatures, making it a wonderfully easy isopod to keep and breed at room temperature.
A damp area on one side of the enclosure and a drier side works well for this species as it does for most others - Moss, dead leaves and rotting wood are very popular with them and to help with their diet some form of calcium should be added in the form of cuttlefish bone, limestone or calcium powder (ground eggshells are also good)
